Xiong’an Geothermal resource utilization
The China Xiong’an Group Smart Energy Co. has developed an integrated platform that orchestrates a comprehensive energy network comprising 746 km of heating pipelines, 14 energy stations, and 176 substations across Xiong'an's six newly developed districts, serving 101,000 households and 15.6 million square meters of floor space. The platform operates a "source-network-station" full-chain monitoring system, integrating operational and video data from all substations, and leverages local meteorological data to enable automated heat load forecasting and regulation. For the 2025-2026 heating season, the platform manages 85 medium-deep and 3,165 shallow geothermal wells, achieving a geothermal renewable heating share of 39%, an 8-percentage-point increase year-over-year. Geothermal resource utilization in Xiong'an strictly follows a balanced extraction-reinjection principle, extracting only heat from the subsurface without water withdrawal, ensuring long-term sustainability. This smart platform serves as an exemplary case for integrated urban geothermal management.
Baiyangdian Lake
Baiyangdian, located in Hebei Province's Xiong'an New Area, is the largest freshwater lake in North China. Covering about 366 square kilometres, it consists of a complex network of waterways, reed marshes, and over 140 separate shallow lakes. Often called the "Kidney of North China," this wetland plays a vital role in flood control, climate regulation, and water purification. The lake supports a rich variety of fish, crustaceans, and over 200 species of birds, making it an important stopover for migratory routes. Its iconic summer lotus blossoms create breathtaking scenery, while the surrounding reed beds provide habitat and materials for local crafts. In recent years, intensive restoration efforts have improved water quality, reduced pollution, and revived aquatic ecosystems. As a central feature of the Xiong'an development plan, Baiyangdian exemplifies sustainable environmental management, securing ecological stability while safeguarding the traditional lifestyle of fishing communities that have thrived along its shores for centuries.
