Tongzhou No.1 Geothermal Energy Station

Located in Lucheng Town, Tongzhou District, the Tongzhou No.1 Geothermal Energy Station is a demonstration project within Beijing’s Urban Subcenter. With a total investment of approximately 101.77 million yuan, the station provides heating and cooling services for a total building area of about 255,700 square meters. The station features 3 ground-source heat pump units, 21 air-source heat pump units, and approximately 737 buried boreholes at an effective depth of 180 meters, efficiently utilizing shallow geothermal energy. As a core project of the Urban Subcenter’s green and low-carbon energy system, the station supplies clean and stable renewable energy for both winter heating and summer cooling. With renewable energy accounting for 100% of its heating capacity, the station offers hydrogeologists an excellent field case study for examining the efficient extraction and utilization of shallow geothermal energy in urban settings.

Zhangjiawan Groundwater Monitoring Center

The Zhangjiawan Groundwater Monitoring Center in Tongzhou District, Beijing, is a key facility for monitoring groundwater quantity, quality, contamination, and land subsidence. It features advanced infrastructure, including a Westbay multi-level system capable of sampling up to 18 aquifer layers separately. The center’s 3D reactive solute transport experimental field enables cutting-edge hydrogeological research. Having hosted international experts through Sino-European cooperation projects, the center stands as a leading platform for integrated groundwater and subsidence monitoring in urbanized delta areas.

Beijing Grand Canal Museum

The Beijing Grand Canal Museum, known as the "Canal Boat," stands as a cultural landmark of the Beijing sub-center. Its architecture draws inspiration from three elements of the ancient canal—boat, sail and water, with the Shared Hall and Exhibition Building resembling a sturdy ship and towering white sails, beautifully connected by a waterside street (Figure 11). As a smart comprehensive museum, it adheres to the China's highest green building standards. Inside, the basic exhibition "Beijing and the Grand Canal" displays over 1,000 artifacts, illustrating how the canal shaped the history of Beijing. This museum vividly reveals the profound bond between a great waterway and a historic city.
