Mangniu River Ecological Water Replenishment Project
The Mangniu River ecological water replenishment project in Shunyi District receives water from the South-to-North Water Diversion. The replenishment route starts from the Lijiashan sluice of the Jingmi Diversion Canal, passes through the Xiaozhong River and enters the Chaobai River via the Mangniu River. Since 2015, groundwater has been effectively replenished, with an average of 17.14 meters, effectively mitigating the long-standing problem of groundwater overexploitation. On this field visit, participants will be able to observe the actual replenishment inlet where diverted water flows into the natural riverbed. We will also visit the groundwater monitoring network deployed across the replenished river corridor, which tracks water table recovery and ecological effects.
Tianzhu Station for Land Subsidence Monitoring
The Beijing Tianzhu Land Subsidence Monitoring Center is one of seven specialized stations tracking land subsidence in the urban area. Overextraction of groundwater has caused significant subsidence in parts of Beijing, and this center provides critical data for understanding and mitigating the problem. During the visit, participants will see advanced monitoring equipment, including extensometers, tiltmeters, and groundwater observation wells. You will learn how real time subsidence data is collected, analyzed, and integrated into groundwater management strategies. The center demonstrates the direct link between aquifer exploitation and land deformation. This field trip offers a practical insight into how hydrogeological monitoring supports sustainable urban planning in a water scarce region.
